‘Honey Girl’ Green Sea Turtle Mutilated on Hawaiian Beach
This morning beach goers and snorkelers on Laniakea Beach, also known as Turtle Beach, on Oahu’s north shore were disgusted to find the body of a mutilated green sea turtle.
The turtle, known as ‘Honey Girl’, had been flipped onto her back and was gutted with one fin cut off. Protected under the Endangered Species Act, killing a turtle is a felony and is punishable by a fine of $10,000 USD and up to five years in jail.
Green sea turtles can weigh up to 700 pounds with a life span of 25-80 years. They spend their adult years in the same area where they were born. Local residents were shocked by this horrible and senseless act of cruelty.
The Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) are investigating and are asking anyone with any information about this heinous crime to come forward and contact them at (808) 453-6780.
