Coney Island Amusement Park Closes?!
New York City’s largest amusement park, Astroland, a trademark at Coney Island, closed its doors yesterday, September 7, 2008.
The property site is owned by Thor Equities and was leased by Astroland. According to the owner of Astroland, Carol Albert, negotiations between the two have been nonexistent. After 40 years in business, 22 rides such as the Tilt-a-Whirl, Bumper Cars and the Scrambler along with arcade equipment, are now reportedly up for sale.
Repeatedly ranked in the top ten list, the world famous wooden roller coaster, Cyclone, gave its first ride to excited park visitors back in 1927. The 60 mile per hour classic coaster is owned independently of Astroland and so it will continue operations as usual.
The parks 150-foot tall ferris wheel, the Wonder Wheel, is also separately owned and will continue regular operations.
