Rhode Island has Tropical Fish?!

Butterfly fish - National Geographic Photo

Who knew.  Apparently this is a regular occurrence each year at this time.  From July to September, tropical fish are brought north by the Gulf Stream from the Caribbean and Florida.

They end up at Fort Wetherill State Park at Jamestown, Rhode Island, where snorkelers and scuba divers gather to see the exotic fish like snowy grouper and butterfly fish.

It is also legal to catch tropical fish in Rhode Island and given that the misplaced fish will surely die in their new habitat, snorkelers spend hours and days trying to rescue as many fish as they can.  Some are kept for private collection while others are donated to any aquarium that will take them.

Fort Wetherill is a popular location for viewing the America’s Cup Races and various Tall Ship events as it sits upon 100 foot tall granite cliffs.
