Delta & Northwest Merger – What You Need to Know
With the recent purchase of Northwest Airlines by Delta Airlines for a cool $2.8 billion, passengers and investors alike are wondering where that leaves them. According to Delta, ‘if you’re travelling, it will be business as usual’, but let’s take a look at basics of the merger.
- Full integration between the two airlines will take between 12-24 months
- Until the integration is complete:
- Delta and Northwest will continue to operate as two separate airlines
- Tickets can still be purchased on the internet at the Northwest or Delta website
- Frequent flyer programs will continue to operate separately with a future consolidation
- passengers can already redeem miles on either carrier
- Check-in with the airline for which you have a ticket, ie. Delta or Northwest
- The headquarters for the new combined airline will be based in Atlanta, GA.
- Shares of Northwest ceased trading last week as shareholders received 1.25 Delta shares for each Northwest share held; Delta shareholders will experience no change
- Signs will be changed at airports and on aircrafts as time permits
