The new Peak 2 Peak gondola connecting Whistler Mountain to Blackcomb Mountain, located near Vancouver, BC, Canada, opened today with a flurry of skiers and fresh powdered snow.

The Peak 2 Peak gondola travels 4.4km (2.73 miles) in a straight line and breaks 3 world’s records in doing so: the longest free span, the highest gondola ride (436 metres/1,427 feet) and the longest continuous lift system in the world.

With 28 cabins in total, each cabin can transport 22 seated and 6 standing passengers. The Peak 2 Peak ride takes only 11 minutes and operates conveniently every 49 seconds.

Traditionally most skiers at Whistler/Blackcomb have chosen to ski only one mountain for the entire day.  Now with the Peak 2 Peak option, they can easily enjoy both mountains.

Whistler/Blackcomb will be one of the homes for the Vancouver 2010 Olympics.
