I

t stands majestically on the corner of First and Monroe in downtown Spokane, WA.  Exuding sex appeal, romance and a style of its own, the Montvale Hotel beckons guests to enter its grandeur.

The art deco doors lead into the lobby’s allure where you’ll be whisked back in time to days gone by….notice the fireplace, elegant high ceilings, the stunning pair of chandeliers, the archway, and the charming lobby desk complete with compartment slots for guest keys.

Built in 1899, the Montvale Hotel could also be known as Spokane’s oldest hotel but don’t let that fool you – this spry 100+ year-old retains all of its turn-of-the-century charm and then some.

With only 36 intimate guest rooms and suites, the non-smoking Montvale Hotel is the ultimate experience in boutique hotels.  Each room offers 11-foot ceilings, period furnishings, flat screen LCD televisions, generously sized bathrooms and the ‘exclusive’ to-die-for Montvale mattress with luxury linens which makes for the most luxurious, comfortable sleep ever

Some rooms offer elegant fireplaces and jetted tubs while the romantic Queen Parlour Rooms with double French Doors offer extra bedding with pull down Murphy beds.  The hotel recommends requesting a room facing the East which provides a nice view of downtown Spokane.

The elegant second floor atrium is nothing less than gorgeous.  The warm inviting colors of browns, reds and rich golds are reminiscent of exotic lands in times gone by.   Vintage sofas are just waiting for guests to gather, with complimentary hot chocolate or French Vanilla coffee, to converse about the day.  The period carpets and abundant artwork accessorize the atrium to perfection.

What makes the Montvale special?  Doug Grieppe, General Manager of the Montvale, states “the staff will go above and beyond the guest’s expectations.”  I agree, as the attention to detail is impressive.  Just as special are the amazingly low room rates that start at only $114 USD and the abundant complimentary breakfast served each morning in the unique setting downstairs in Catacombs Pub.  Sounds eerie, doesn’t it?

Catacombs Pub was formerly the boiler room and coal chute for the Montvale in its earlier days but has now been converted into a popular local attraction.  Robert C. Brewster Jr., President of ConoverBond Development and the owner of the Montvale Hotel, describes Catacombs by saying “it’s salt of the earth Spokane – not over the top or a copy of what you’d find in other places.  It’s a true original.”  Catacombs Pub offers a daily Happy Hour from 5:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. with $6.00 pizzas that can’t be beat.

Known as Spokane’s premier boutique hotel, the Montvale is in one of the most desirable locations in downtown Spokane.  Deserving of its grandiose location on the corner, the Montvale stands across from the Fox Theater, is moments away from the Knitting Factory and minutes away from the Steam Plant Grill.  You’ll also find Riverfront Park, Riverfront Square, and the INB Performing Arts Center within convenient walking distance.

The Weekend, Dinner & Movie Package is the most popular way to stay and play at the Montvale Hotel.  The complete package includes one night accommodation in a deluxe room, dinner for two in Catacombs Pub ($30 value), two AMC movie theater passes, complimentary Valet parking ($15 value) and the wonderful Full Continental Breakfast in Catacombs Pub (priceless) for only $169 USD per couple.

Another popular option is the Winter Ski & Shopping Package with all of the above features plus the addition of a Riverpark Square gift card ($25 value) and two ski lift tickets to your choice of Mt. Spokane, 49 Degrees North, Schweitzer Mountain Resort, Silver Mountain Resort or Lookout Pass for only $269 USD per couple.

The Montvale Hotel is all about the details and so I love this feature.  If you book your room through the hotels website, you can choose to “Enhance Your Stay” by pre-purchasing a gift card to Catacombs, or to order wines, cakes, or my favorite – a S’Mores kit complete with all the ingredients to enjoy at your in-room fireplace.  Whatever you desire will be waiting for you upon check-in.  Could they make it any easier?

If you’re looking for more than a hotel, you’re definitely looking for the Montvale.
